延髄の咳中枢に直接作用し、咳反射を抑制します。コデインと異なり麻薬性がなく、依存性が低いとされています。NMDA受容体拮抗作用も有します。

Acts directly on the cough center in the medulla oblongata to suppress the cough reflex. Unlike codeine, it is non-narcotic with low dependency potential. Also has NMDA receptor antagonist activity.
